What Is Molded PTFE Sheet?

Molded PTFE sheet is produced by placing PTFE molding powder into a flat mold, applying controlled pressure and sintering the compressed material at a specified temperature.

The molding process is commonly used for thicker sheets that will be cut or machined into finished components. It provides sufficient material thickness for producing seals, valve parts, bearing pads, electrical insulators and other custom parts.

Compared with skived PTFE sheet, molded sheet is supplied as an individual flat sheet rather than a continuous roll.

Available PTFE Grades

Virgin Molded PTFE Sheet

Virgin molded PTFE sheet is manufactured from unfilled PTFE resin. It provides broad chemical resistance, low friction, electrical insulation and very low moisture absorption.

Typical applications include:

  • Chemical equipment components
  • Electrical insulation parts
  • Laboratory equipment
  • Flange gaskets
  • Valve components
  • General-purpose machined parts

Modified Molded PTFE Sheet

Modified PTFE contains a controlled amount of modifier designed to improve selected properties such as deformation resistance, dimensional stability or permeability.

The appropriate formulation depends on pressure, temperature, chemical exposure and the design of the finished component.

Filled Molded PTFE Sheet

Filled PTFE is selected when virgin PTFE does not provide sufficient wear resistance, load capacity or dimensional stability.

Available formulations may include:

  • Glass-filled PTFE
  • Carbon-filled PTFE
  • Graphite-filled PTFE
  • Bronze-filled PTFE
  • Carbon fiber-filled PTFE

Filler type and percentage affect friction, wear, deformation, electrical properties and chemical compatibility. The formulation should be selected according to the actual operating conditions.

Molded PTFE Sheet Applications

Molded PTFE sheet is commonly used as semi-finished material for manufacturing:

  • PTFE gaskets
  • Valve seats
  • Seal rings
  • Backup rings
  • Bearing pads
  • Slide plates
  • Wear strips
  • Guide plates
  • Electrical insulators
  • Pump components
  • Chemical-resistant liners
  • Flange insulation parts
  • Machined discs and spacers
  • Custom CNC-machined PTFE components

Finished-part performance depends on the PTFE grade, dimensions, mechanical load, operating temperature, pressure, chemical media and installation method.

Molded PTFE Sheet vs. Skived PTFE Sheet

Comparison Molded PTFE Sheet Skived PTFE Sheet
Manufacturing Process Compression molded and sintered in a flat mold Continuously skived from a cylindrical PTFE billet
Supply Format Individual flat sheets and blocks Rolls or cut sheets
Typical Thickness Better suited to medium and thick sections Better suited to thin and medium thicknesses
Common Processing Cutting, milling, drilling and CNC machining Slitting, punching, die cutting and gasket production
Typical Applications Thick gaskets, valve parts, wear plates and machined components Thin gaskets, insulation, liners and converted parts
Surface Options Molded or machined Continuous skived surface

Molded PTFE sheet is generally more suitable when the finished part requires greater thickness or machining allowance. Skived PTFE sheet is preferred when thinner material, continuous length or roll supply is required.

Molded Surface and Machined Surface

Molded Surface

A molded surface retains the finish produced during compression molding and sintering. It is suitable for applications that do not require tightly controlled surface dimensions.

Machined Surface

Machining removes material from one or both sides of the sheet to improve thickness control, flatness or surface consistency.

Specify the required final thickness and tolerance when ordering machined PTFE sheet. Additional machining allowance may be required before the sheet reaches its finished dimensions.

Cut-to-Size and CNC Machining

JAIFUXIN can supply molded PTFE sheet as full sheets, cut blanks or finished machined parts.

Available processing includes:

  • Cutting to specified width and length
  • Surface machining
  • Thickness machining
  • Cutting rectangular blanks
  • Producing round discs
  • Producing rings and washers
  • Drilling holes
  • Milling slots and profiles
  • CNC turning and milling
  • Manufacturing according to drawings or samples

For machined components, dimensions should be identified as finished dimensions rather than raw molded dimensions.

How to Select a Molded PTFE Sheet

Confirm the Material Grade

Virgin PTFE is suitable for chemical resistance, electrical insulation and general-purpose components. Filled grades should be considered when the application requires improved wear performance, reduced deformation or higher load capacity.

Select the Sheet Thickness

The selected thickness should include any machining allowance required to produce the finished component. Choosing a sheet that is unnecessarily thick increases material usage and machining time.

Check the Sheet Size

Standard sheet sizes are:

  • 1000 × 1000 mm
  • 1200 × 1200 mm
  • 1500 × 1500 mm

The most economical size depends on finished-part dimensions, cutting layout, thickness and required quantity.

Define the Required Tolerance

Raw molded sheet and machined sheet have different dimensional capabilities. Provide the required finished tolerance so the appropriate production and machining method can be evaluated.

Provide Operating Conditions

Material selection should consider:

  • Continuous and maximum temperature
  • Chemical media and concentration
  • Working pressure
  • Static or dynamic load
  • Sliding speed
  • Required service life
  • Electrical requirements
  • Cleanliness requirements

Information Required for a Quotation

Please provide the following information:

  • Material grade
  • Filler type and percentage, if required
  • Sheet thickness
  • Width and length
  • Dimensional tolerance
  • Molded or machined surface
  • Full sheet or cut-to-size requirement
  • Order quantity
  • Operating temperature
  • Chemical media
  • Mechanical load
  • Finished application
  • Drawing or sample
  • Inspection and documentation requirements

Complete specifications help determine the correct mold size, machining allowance, material formulation and production method.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes are available for molded PTFE sheet?

Standard sheet sizes include 1000 × 1000 mm, 1200 × 1200 mm and 1500 × 1500 mm. Availability depends on the required thickness, material formulation and order quantity.

What thicknesses are available?

Molded PTFE sheets are available from 3 to 100 mm thick. Common thicknesses include 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100 mm.

Can molded PTFE sheet be cut to custom dimensions?

Yes. Sheets can be supplied in full size or cut into rectangular blanks, discs, rings and other shapes. Custom dimensions can be produced according to drawings.

Can molded PTFE sheet be CNC machined?

Yes. Molded PTFE sheet can be drilled, milled and turned into seals, valve seats, bearings, electrical insulators and custom industrial components.

What is the difference between molded and skived PTFE sheet?

Molded PTFE sheet is compression molded as an individual flat sheet and is commonly selected for thicker components. Skived sheet is continuously cut from a cylindrical billet and is commonly supplied in thinner rolls or cut sheets.

Is virgin or filled PTFE better?

Neither grade is suitable for every application. Virgin PTFE provides strong chemical resistance and electrical insulation. Filled PTFE can improve wear resistance, load performance or dimensional stability, depending on the filler.

Are all thicknesses available in every sheet size?

No. Maximum sheet size may change with thickness, PTFE formulation and production quantity. The required combination should be confirmed before ordering.

Can I order a machined PTFE sheet with a tighter thickness tolerance?

Yes. One-side or two-side machining can be evaluated when the raw molded tolerance does not meet the finished requirement. Provide the required final thickness, tolerance and surface condition.

Is Teflon sheet the same as PTFE sheet?

Teflon™ is a registered brand name associated with fluoropolymers. PTFE is the generic material name used in technical drawings and purchase specifications.
